South Pacific

I enjoy musicals, particularly of the 40s, 50s.  Since then, too many have become leftist leaning.

Now, some plays/musicals can be interpreted more than one way.  I filter through collectivist murk and find meaning where I can.

South Pacific is based on James Michener's Tales of the South Pacific.  Michener was liberal bent so the above is useful when dealing with his work.

A sidenote: Don't agree at all with his interp of the Electoral process.  Another time for that perhaps.

South Pacific is a classic and has been performed round the world, as well as the movie.  I recommend that.

It takes place on a small island where natives live.  There is also a French expatriate's plantation.  He is portrayed as a good guy and treats the natives well.

There is also an American naval base.

I'll leave you to find the movie.

There is a subplot where the plantation owner and a naval lieutenant go to track Japanese activity.

My interest here is part of the narrative involving a naval nurse falling in love with the owner.  He has mixed race kids and she struggles to accept them.

Also the lieutenant falls for a native girl, but fears how she would be accepted back home.  He dies, thus alleviating the situation but leaving questions unanswered.

The nurse overcomes her reticence and accepts the kids, whom she loves.

A song sung by the lieutenant, You Have To Be Carefully Taught explores racial prejudice.  We start out accepting but can quickly pick up the ways of others.  BTW, didn't work with me.  I've always accepted people as they are.  Something inbuilt methinks.

Many a young man brought 'war brides' back from all over the world.  All have contributed wonderfully to America.  We're a melting pot as in E Pluribus Unum.

The object of our enemies is control.  One way to achieve that is to divide racially.  It's not working as well as they'd like.  We, in mixing are not a bland glop.  We are vibrant and celebrate difference yet unite as Americans with Liberty in common.

One other song, Happy Talk champions love and hope.

You gotta have a dream, if you don't have a dream, how you gonna have a dream come true?

We are lucky to be us indeed!
